Obituary of Maurice Cherrier

Maurice Cherrier, age 93, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Nancy Cherrier. Everybody loved Moe – He had such a positive attitude and great outlook on life – everyone wanted to be around him. Most people called him, “Moe” – and the majority of his grandchildren called him, “King Moe”. His favorite saying was, “Life is Great”!

Maurice was born in Ormstown, Quebec Canada on October 27, 1930 to Dorilda (Soucy) Cherrier and Adolphe Cherrier. In his early 20’s throughout his late 50’s he lived in Central Islip, Long Island, NY before moving to Florida.

Maurice was involved with hockey since he was old enough to wear a pair of skates. His dad (who was his hockey coach) built him and his friends a hockey rink in back of the elementary school. Maurice also loved when the trotting horses came to the town of Ormstown to race each summer. At the age of 10, he volunteered to work at their stables after school - cleaning the stalls, exercising the horses, etc. A few years later, the owner offered Maurice a job as a groom to work & travel with the trotting horses. He began traveling with the trotting horses throughout Canada and the United States. At age 25, while living in Long Island, NY, he enlisted in the United States Army, served two years, then received an honorable discharge. Next to working with the trotting horses, his other passion was playing the game of hockey. He played hockey with the Long Island hockey teams for many years prior to moving to Florida.

In 1986, Maurice moved to Florida and met the love of his life, Nancy. They married in 1993. They loved dancing, walking the beach, traveling, and spending time with their families. Maurice worked at Orkin Pest Control in Clearwater for over 10 years. He also worked nights for the Tampa Bay Skating Academy in Oldsmar as their Zamboni Operator for over 20 years. He was a member of the Oldsmar Senior Hockey League. Maurice loved playing the game of golf, especially with his close buddies – which he continued to play through the age of 88.

Along with his loving wife, Nancy of 30+ years, he is survived by his daughters, Michele, Danielle, & Natalie and their husbands; his sons, Steven & Eddie and their wives; & many wonderful, loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will be missed by so many….. as there was only “ONE” Moe Cherrier……
