Obituary of Steven Brown

Nutritional chef and boxing trainer Steven “Coach” Brown’s love of family, friends, and community is unending and everlasting. Coach passed away on September 16, 2023, but those who loved him will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Coach was born and raised in New Jersey. In the mid-90s, he followed his sister Claudia and their mother in migrating south to make Tampa, Florida their home.

Both in New Jersey and in Florida, Coach trained and mentored local youth in both martial arts and boxing. Several of his mentees grew with him to make their mark as professional boxers. Traveling to different venues such as Bally’s in Atlantic City, Coach had the opportunity to meet with some of his heroes like Larry Holmes and Ray Mercer.

Coach’s skills in the kitchen were honed by decades of running restaurant kitchens. His was a business, and a well-oiled machine. Later in life, he was a Dietary Chef at Tampa General Hospital. He was a member of the disaster team, staying overnight at the hospital during hurricanes and other natural disasters to ensure that patients and staff were provided with meals. The team at TGH were an extended family that he was proud to be a part of. With his culinary experience combined with his experience in the ring, he learned how to properly fine tune the dietary needs of his fighters, helping them to stay both healthy and strong.

Coach had an uncanny ability to find happiness in his daily life, and his unwavering support for his fighters leaves a legacy that lives through them with skill in the ring, and love in their personal lives.

Coach was preceded in death by his parents, William Brown and Evelyn Middleton, his brothers Lenny Brown and Phillip Brown, and his sister Claudia Knight. He is survived by his son Antwan Brown, his sister Georgette Brown and brother Mark Brown, his nieces, nephews, and his chosen family.

Our family would like to extend a special thank you to Coach’s bonus son Keenen “Chill” Jackson for his support and dedication throughout the past several decades, both in and out of the ring.

A memorial service to honor Coach’s life with family and friends will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, October 7th at Copeland Park, shelter #502, located at 11001 N 15th St, Tampa, FL 33612
