Obituary of Lewis Lederer

Lewis Lederer passed away peacefully at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Florida on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2020. He was 89 years old. Lewis was born on March 6, 1931 in Manhattan, New York, to David and Lilian Lederer. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and City College of New York. He also attended Columbia University studying philosophy. He worked as a civil servant for the Post Office, the IRS, the Department of Defense and the Department of the Army in New York and Washington, DC, respectively. At the Department of the Army, he worked installing computer networks around the country and in Europe. He retired early, at age 55, to pursue his lifelong interests in sailing, photography, and classical music. He moved to Pinellas County, Florida, in the early 1990s where he met his second wife Jan and worked part-time as a wedding videographer. Lewis and Jan were together for over 20 years and married in November of 2005. They connected over their love of the water and spent many days sailing in the Gulf of Mexico or socializing with their friends from The Clearwater Community Sailing Center. They had two cats, Missy and Angel, that they both loved very much. He was a Captain in the Merchant Marines and taught sailing and celestial navigation. Later in life, he taught English as a second language. He also loved chess and bike riding. Lewis leaves behind his wife Janice Lederer of Clearwater, Florida, children James Lederer and Martha Lederer from his first marriage, step-daughter Heidi Bush and her husband Mark, sister Phyllis Scheinhaus and her husband Daniel, nephews Ron, Lawrence and Neil Scheinhaus, grand-nieces and nephews Samuel, Gary and Rachel Scheinhaus, great grand-nieces and nephews Jacob and Hannah Scheinhaus and Jonah Hanukaev, first wife Frances (Pat) Taube, and best friend Ted O’Brien.
